Those software products will do all the tedious but vital work for you, such as finding the available expired domains, the domains due for expiry and the number of links to each name. Some will allow you to find the Alexa PR number of the domain name website and of those linking to it. All vital indicators as to the worth of the individual domain name.

A good name will be a short single word with many high quality links to it. If it has this and is suitable for your business then you can indeed make a lot of money from expired domain names.
